DFSK Launches Right-Hand Drive E5 Plus in Indonesia Amidst Growing Competition in Southeast Asia

TANGERANG, Indonesia — At the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, which concluded on August 9, 2026, Chinese vehicle manufacturer DFSK showcased its right-hand drive E5 Plus plug-in hybrid SUV. This launch represents the model's first entry into a right-hand drive market, following an earlier preview at the International Automotive and Supply Chain Expo in Hong Kong earlier this year. The introduction of the E5 Plus underscores the strategic shift among Chinese automotive manufacturers from pure export strategies to localized assembly within key regional hubs.
DFSK, operating under the Seres Group umbrella, aims to tap into the growing demand for flexible plug-in powertrains in Southeast Asia, where public charging infrastructure remains inconsistent. The E5 Plus is equipped with the Seres Super Hybrid System, which combines a gasoline engine with a 25.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack. According to the manufacturer's figures based on the NEDC testing cycle, this battery allows for up to 140 kilometers of all-electric driving on a single charge. For longer journeys, the gasoline-electric powertrain extends the total driving range to approximately 1,400 kilometers.
This dual power setup aligns with the purchasing preferences in Southeast Asia, where urban centers like Jakarta and Bangkok are witnessing a rapid increase in battery electric vehicle sales. However, drivers who regularly travel between provinces often express concerns about the availability of charging stations and the associated wait times. Plug-in hybrids like the E5 Plus offer a solution by enabling all-electric operation for daily urban commutes while providing the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer highway travel.
Tailored specifically for the Indonesian market, the E5 Plus features a six-seat cabin configuration with independent second-row captain chairs, catering to the preference for larger family vehicles. Additionally, the suspension system has been fine-tuned with adaptive frequency selective damping to ensure comfort on Indonesia's often rough road surfaces, especially during the heavy monsoon season.
In terms of technology, the E5 Plus boasts a localized digital cockpit interface that supports five regional languages, including Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, Malay, Vietnamese, and Traditional Chinese. Standard features include integration with Apple CarPlay and popular streaming platforms like Spotify, addressing previous criticisms regarding early Chinese EV exports that relied on proprietary software. Furthermore, the model is equipped with advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control, lane centering control, and lane departure warnings, utilizing five millimeter-wave radar units, 22 sensors, and a comprehensive 360-degree camera system to enhance driver assistance.
DFSK's president, Amy Gong, highlighted the significant consumer interest in the E5 Plus, revealing that the model had already amassed over 1,200 pre-orders in Indonesia prior to its official presentation at the auto show. This early demand indicates a positive reception for high-capacity hybrid vehicles priced competitively against traditional Japanese offerings.
The E5 Plus is assembled at DFSK's manufacturing facility in West Java, Indonesia, which is crucial for compliance with the country's stringent national policy frameworks. Indonesia mandates that vehicle manufacturers meet specific local content thresholds to qualify for tax incentives and import tariff exemptions. Additionally, with Indonesia possessing the world's largest reserves of nickel—an essential component in lithium-ion battery production—DFSK's local assembly aligns with Jakarta's goal of transforming the nation into a key production hub for electric and hybrid vehicles across the ASEAN region.
The factory is not only focused on the domestic market but is also positioned to serve as a production base for right-hand drive exports to other countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. These markets require right-hand drive configurations, which traditionally necessitated separate engineering processes from the left-hand drive vehicles produced for mainland China, North America, and continental Europe. By establishing right-hand drive tooling in Indonesia, DFSK aims to streamline export logistics for neighboring countries without the need for re-engineering vehicles at its primary Chinese factories.
The launch of the E5 Plus adds to the competitive landscape in Southeast Asia, which has seen a surge of Chinese automotive brands entering the market. Legacy Japanese automakers such as Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi have historically dominated with market shares exceeding 80% across major ASEAN nations. However, this stronghold is being challenged as Chinese brands introduce electrified vehicles at competitive price points. While companies like BYD and Wuling have made significant strides with affordable electric hatchbacks and small crossovers, the family SUV and multi-purpose vehicle segments remain critical battlegrounds. In Southeast Asia, buyers often prioritize passenger capacity, climate control efficiency, and long-term resale value over mere acceleration figures.
At the event, Amy Gong reaffirmed DFSK's commitment to deepening its long-term investment in Indonesia by expanding its sales and service networks alongside localized research and development initiatives. DFSK initially entered the Indonesian market in 2017 with commercial vans and small utility trucks before shifting its focus toward passenger SUVs and electrified platforms under the Seres brand. With operations spanning over 70 countries and regions globally, the introduction of right-hand drive plug-in hybrids like the E5 Plus signals a significant adaptation of global vehicle trade patterns in response to regional industrial policies, particularly as Southeast Asian governments tighten emissions standards and offer incentives for localized vehicle assembly.
