Waymo Set to Launch Robotaxi Service in Japan by 2027

Waymo, the self-driving vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, is gearing up to introduce its robotaxi services in Japan, marking a significant expansion into one of the world's most technologically advanced markets. The company has announced plans to launch a commercial unmanned ride-hailing service in Tokyo by 2027, collaborating with Japanese mobility platform GO and longstanding taxi operator Nihon Kotsu.
The initiative, which has been in the works since Waymo's entry into Tokyo in 2025, aims to leverage the combined expertise of its partners. Waymo's autonomous vehicles have spent the past year navigating Tokyo's complex urban landscape under the supervision of trained Nihon Kotsu crew members, ensuring they can handle the city's narrow streets and crowded environments effectively.
Waymo's Co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating, "Scaling autonomous mobility requires relentless dedication to safety and execution." She noted that Waymo currently provides over half a million trips weekly, demonstrating a safety record that is over 15 times safer than that of human drivers. This focus on safety is particularly crucial in Japan, where the population is aging and there is a growing demand for reliable transportation options.
The partnership with GO is expected to enhance user experience, allowing riders to book both conventional taxis and autonomous rides through the GO app. Hiroshi Nakajima, President of GO, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Since our announcement in December 2024, we have been making steady progress in collaboration with Waymo, Nihon Kotsu, and various other stakeholders. We are very pleased to be able to share this progress with the people of Japan."
Waymo's entry into the Japanese market comes at a time when local automakers have been slower to adopt autonomous vehicle technology compared to their American and Chinese counterparts. The conservative nature of Japan's automotive industry, dominated by legacy companies like Toyota and Honda, has created an opportunity for Waymo to establish itself as a leader in the autonomous mobility sector.
Waymo's expansion into Japan is seen as a strategic move to tap into the country’s interest in innovative technologies while addressing the challenges of an aging population and potential labor shortages in the transportation sector. By providing a dependable and technologically advanced option for urban mobility, Waymo aims to complement Tokyo's well-established public transportation network.
As Waymo prepares for its 2027 launch, it remains focused on building trust with potential riders in Tokyo. The company's history of successful operations in the United States serves as a foundation for its ambitions in Japan, where it hopes to replicate its success and establish a robust autonomous ride-hailing service. This venture not only represents a milestone for Waymo but also signals a significant step forward for the adoption of autonomous vehicles in Japan, a country known for its technological prowess and innovation.
In summary, Waymo's planned launch of its robotaxi service in Tokyo by 2027 reflects both the company's strategic growth ambitions and Japan's evolving transportation landscape. With a strong emphasis on safety and collaboration with local partners, Waymo is poised to make a significant impact in the Japanese market, potentially transforming urban mobility in one of the world's largest cities.
