Increasing EV Charging Infrastructure in Queensland's Tourist Regions

In a recent event held in Kingaroy, Queensland, the pressing need for high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in tourist regions was underscored. Kingaroy, located approximately 218 km northwest of Brisbane, serves as a popular stop for travelers exploring the scenic drives of D’Aguilar and Bunya Highway. The town, known for its lush greenery and boutique wineries, is also recognized as the peanut capital of Australia. Despite its charm and strategic location, Kingaroy has faced challenges in providing adequate EV charging facilities for visitors.
Prior to the event organized by the Australian Electric Vehicle Association Queensland (AEVA), the only high-speed charger in Kingaroy had been out of service for several months, leading to frustrations among local residents and businesses. However, it was repaired just in time for the gathering, which saw over 20 electric vehicles in attendance from various regions including Mackay, Gympie, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and Brisbane. Mayor Kathy Duff, who attended the event, emphasized the importance of EV chargers in boosting local tourism, stating, "EV chargers are a benefit to our region as they encourage more travellers and tourism to the South Burnett."
The event provided an opportunity for local EV owners and enthusiasts to connect and share their experiences. Participants reported a steady level of public interest, with many attendees stopping to engage with EV owners and learn about electric vehicles and charging options. Although only a few vehicles utilized the charging facilities during the event, it was noted that the turnout demonstrated a growing awareness and interest in electric vehicles among the public.
Mayor Duff herself expressed the necessity for enhanced charging infrastructure, particularly for regional drivers who often travel significant distances. She highlighted her own travel requirements of around 1,200 km per week, which currently make hybrid vehicles more practical for her needs. This conversation pointed to the broader issue of how additional fast charging options could facilitate greater EV adoption among residents with similar travel patterns.
The event showcased a variety of electric vehicles, including Teslas and Atto 3s, as well as a Mini Cooper EV and several Hyundai and Kia models. The presence of a Tesla towing a caravan caught the attention of many attendees, illustrating the versatility of modern EVs for both tourism and practical applications.
Despite Kingaroy's conservative reputation, the event was largely well-received, with minimal negative feedback from the public. However, there was one instance of a local individual expressing discontent, which was noted as an exception rather than the norm. This suggests a growing acceptance of electric vehicles in a region that has historically been slower to adopt such technologies compared to urban centers like Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Recent statistics indicate a significant increase in EV ownership across Queensland's regions, with the Western Downs region reporting a staggering 97.8% increase in EV registrations between June 2025 and June 2026. Gladstone and Somerset followed closely with increases of 95.6% and 87.2%, respectively. In contrast, Brisbane saw a 43.4% rise, while the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast recorded increases of 47.1% and 60.3%. Dr. Michael Kane, Executive Manager of Public Policy at RACQ, noted that this trend highlights the need for more public charging stations to support tourism in these areas.
The ongoing maintenance issues related to charging infrastructure remain a significant barrier to the growth of an EV tourism industry in Queensland. The successful installation of high-speed chargers at major tourist destinations like Uluru serves as a model for other regions to follow. Local businesses, councils, and government entities may need to collaborate to create a sustainable funding model for charging stations, ensuring that both tourists and residents have access to reliable charging options.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, particularly in rural and regional Australia, it is crucial for local authorities and stakeholders to prioritize the development of EV charging infrastructure. This will not only support tourism but also contribute to the broader goal of transitioning to sustainable transportation solutions across the country. With thorough planning and collaborative efforts, the future of EV tourism in Queensland looks promising, paving the way for a greener and more accessible travel experience for all.
