The Unstoppable Rise of Leapmotor: A Record Month for China's EV Market

In August 2026, China's electric vehicle (EV) market achieved a remarkable milestone, reaching a record 65% market share, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) alone accounting for 45% of total sales. This surge in EV sales comes amidst a dramatic decline in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales, which fell 24% year over year to approximately 1.5 million units. The downturn affected plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), which dropped 30%, and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), which saw a 22% decline. In stark contrast, BEV sales increased by 1% year over year, marking a significant shift in consumer preferences towards electrification.
The rise of BEVs has contributed to a substantial increase in the overall EV market share for 2026, now at 57%, which is already 3% higher than the total for 2025. Analysts predict that if current trends continue, the EV share in China could surpass 60% by the end of the year, with BEVs expected to exceed 40% of total sales. This shift indicates a potential complete electrification of the Chinese automotive market before 2030, with an all-BEV market anticipated by 2035.
One of the key players in this electrification trend is Leapmotor, a startup based in Hangzhou. In August, Leapmotor's A10 model achieved 30,652 registrations, becoming the second-best-selling vehicle in the B-segment. The A10 is priced competitively at 66,000 yuan (approximately $10,000) and features a design that sets it apart from the traditional offerings of the brand. The company's A05 hatchback also made an impressive debut, registering 8,340 units in its second month on the market, showcasing Leapmotor's growing influence in the competitive EV landscape.
The best-selling vehicle for August was the Geely Xingyuan, which sold 39,651 units, despite experiencing a 14% drop compared to August 2025. The vehicle's success is indicative of the intense competition in the Chinese market, with several new models vying for consumer attention. Other notable performers included the BYD Song, which secured third place with 29,857 registrations, and the Tesla Model Y, which recorded 29,260 units sold, despite a 26% year-over-year decline.
The Chinese automotive market is also witnessing a significant increase in exports, with nearly a million units (888,000) exported in August, a 78% increase year over year. The EV share of these exports mirrored the domestic market, standing at 58% in August compared to 40% in the same month last year. This export growth is not only helping local manufacturers but is also contributing to the electrification of international markets.
The competition among local manufacturers is fierce, with Leapmotor's A10 and A05 models poised to challenge established brands like Geely and BYD. Leapmotor's overall sales surged by 66% year over year, totaling 84,874 registrations in August, positioning it just below Volkswagen in the rankings. Analysts expect Leapmotor to continue its upward trajectory, potentially overtaking Geely in market share in the coming months.
As traditional automakers struggle with declining sales, the landscape is shifting towards a future dominated by local EV manufacturers. The ongoing decline of ICE vehicles highlights the urgency for legacy brands to adapt to this new reality. With the increasing importance of electrification, companies that invest in BEV technology are likely to thrive, while those that remain tied to ICE technology may find themselves at a significant disadvantage.
In summary, the August sales figures reflect a pivotal moment in the Chinese automotive industry, characterized by the rapid rise of electric vehicles and the decline of traditional internal combustion engine models. As Leapmotor and other local brands continue to innovate and capture market share, the future of the automotive landscape in China appears increasingly electrified.
