XPENG G9L Enters European Market with Trial Production in Austria

On October 7, 2026, the first XPENG G9L rolled off the trial production line in Graz, Austria, as the company prepares to introduce this model to the European market. The G9L is the fourth vehicle produced at this facility, which is operated by Magna, a well-established Canadian automotive manufacturer known for its expertise in assembling premium vehicles. Other models produced at the same plant include XPENG's G6, G9, and P7+.
Zhang Li, Vice President of Global Manufacturing at XPENG, emphasized that this production milestone is a critical step in the company's journey from entering the European market to building vehicles specifically for European customers. He noted, "By combining global vehicle development and AI technology with established local manufacturing expertise, we are bringing the next-gen XPENG vehicles closer to customers in Europe and around the world."
The G9L is designed as a global vehicle from inception, with plans to launch in 64 countries and regions, including markets such as Malaysia. XPENG has reported a remarkable 81% increase in exports this year, indicating strong demand for its vehicles. The company's commitment to global growth is evident as it seeks to ramp up production and sales.
To ensure that the G9L meets international standards, XPENG has validated the vehicle against regulations from 26 countries, conducting approximately 6.74 million kilometers of road testing over the past three years. This extensive testing has included 192 crash tests under over 110 different protocols, resulting in 5-star ratings from various safety organizations, including E-NCAP, A-NCAP, C-NCAP, and C-IASI. The G9L also incorporates numerous active and passive safety systems, reflecting XPENG's aerospace experience in creating redundant safety features.
In addition to standard safety tests, the G9L underwent rigorous challenges, including water, fire, and multiple impact tests under a specially designed "720-degree" safety challenge. This comprehensive approach underscores XPENG's commitment to safety and quality in its vehicles.
The G9L is equipped with XPENG’s advanced VLA 2.0 intelligent driving system, set to launch in Europe in early 2027, coinciding with the implementation of UN DCAS regulations. This intelligent driving system has received positive feedback for its performance on challenging roads in both China and Europe. However, the larger size of the G9L may present unique challenges on narrow European streets, often crowded with bicycles and scooters, making the intelligent driving system a crucial feature for this SUV.
Furthermore, the G9L integrates AI technology into its chassis to optimize ride comfort and driving dynamics. Given the varying road conditions and preferences across different markets, XPENG has invested significant effort into tuning the vehicle's performance. The G9L features dual-chamber air suspension, intelligent variable damping, and rear-wheel steering, which collectively enhance maneuverability and handling, making it easier to drive despite its larger size.
The initial unit produced in Austria is destined for the Paris Motor Show, where it will make its official debut on October 12, 2026. This event will provide an opportunity for industry experts and potential customers to experience the G9L in person, showcasing its features and capabilities.
XPENG's strategic approach to combining global development with local manufacturing in Europe positions the company favorably as it seeks to expand its footprint in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. The partnership with Magna not only enhances production capabilities but also raises the potential for future manufacturing ventures in North America, where XPENG may consider assembling vehicles to cater to that market as well. With a strong focus on innovation, safety, and customer satisfaction, XPENG is poised to make a significant impact in the European automotive landscape.
