Volkswagen Unveils the New ID. Tiguan: A Bold Step into Electric Mobility

On October 9, 2026, Volkswagen introduced the ID. Tiguan, marking a significant milestone in the company's transition to electric mobility. This new model is set to succeed the ID.4 and ID.5, which have collectively seen over 950,000 units built. The ID. Tiguan is expected to launch in early 2027, alongside traditional petrol, diesel, and hybrid versions of the Tiguan, reinforcing Volkswagen's commitment to offering diverse powertrains.
The ID. Tiguan boasts a completely redesigned exterior that gives it a premium appearance, complemented by a high-quality interior featuring innovative technology. The vehicle includes a co-driver display for the first time in a European Volkswagen, enhancing the driving experience for both the driver and passenger. The interior design incorporates a new display landscape, with a 12-inch co-driver display, a 10-inch driver display, and a central 15-inch infotainment screen, all working together to provide a seamless user experience.
Volkswagen's CEO, Thomas Schäfer, emphasized the importance of the Tiguan as the brand's best-selling model globally. He stated, "The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together. A pure, confident design with the presence of a vehicle from the next class up, intuitive operation, and, thanks to MEB+, a range of up to 600 kilometers: a new benchmark for our electric SUVs made in Germany."
The ID. Tiguan will be available in three performance levels, including: 1. A rear-wheel drive version with 140 kW (190 PS) and a 58 kWh battery. 2. A rear-wheel drive version with 210 kW (286 PS) and a 77 kWh battery. 3. A 220 kW (299 PS) 4MOTION all-wheel drive variant, also with a 77 kWh battery.
Depending on the power and battery size, the ID. Tiguan is expected to achieve WLTP ranges of up to 600 km. The vehicle's towing capacity is also noteworthy, reaching up to 2,000 kg with the 77 kWh battery. Additionally, the ID. Tiguan features a front trunk (frunk) with 32 liters of storage space and a luggage compartment volume of up to 534 liters, making it practical for everyday use.
Volkswagen has integrated numerous customer-requested enhancements into the ID. Tiguan, including a revamped cockpit landscape and intuitive controls. The air conditioning system now employs a button bar for basic functions, while the door openers have been ergonomically optimized. The vehicle also includes two inductive charging points compliant with the Qi2 standard, allowing for convenient smartphone charging.
One of the standout features of the ID. Tiguan is the introduction of 'Retro' displays, which allow drivers to activate classic blue-red instruments from previous Volkswagen models, such as the Golf IV, on the Digital Cockpit. This feature adds a nostalgic touch while providing essential information about energy flow in the drive.
The ID. Tiguan is equipped with modern assistance and comfort systems. Standard features include one-pedal driving, which allows for strong deceleration using the accelerator pedal alone, and the new Connected Travel Assist, which facilitates assisted lane changing and automatically halts the vehicle at red traffic lights. Optional comfort features include electrically adjustable front seats with massage and ventilation functions, a high-end Harman Kardon sound system, and a panoramic sunroof.
Volkswagen has also introduced a Digital Key feature that allows users to unlock, lock, and start the vehicle using a compatible smartphone. This key can be easily shared with family or friends via the Volkswagen app. Additionally, the ID. Tiguan supports Vehicle-to-Load technology, enabling users to power various electrical devices using the car's charging socket.
Pre-sales for the ID. Tiguan are set to begin on October 13, 2026, in Germany and several other European markets, with prices starting at €42,695. This launch underscores Volkswagen's strategy to solidify its position in the electric vehicle market, combining advanced technology with user-friendly features and a commitment to sustainability.
